The plantar fascia thickness was measured 5 mm distal to the insertion of the calcaneus of plantar aponeurosis. Qualitative parameters such as decreased echogenity, biconvexity, perifascial fluid and calcification of plantar fascia were also noted.<h4>Results</h4>Mean plantar fascia thickness was measured 2.9 mm in patients with unilateral heel pain, 2.2 mm for contralateral normal heel and 2.5mm for control group. There was a statistically significant difference between heel with plantar fasciitis, contralateral normal heel and control groups (p=0.009 and 0.0001, respectively). Mean body mass index was 28 kg/m(2) in patients with heel pain and 25 kg/m2 in control group. Body mass index measurements were significantly different between plantar fasciitis and control groups. We found reduced plantar fascia echogenity in 16 cases (41%), calcaneal spur in 20 cases (51%), biconvex appearance in two cases (5.1%) and perifascial fluid in one case (2.5%).<h4>Conclusion</h4>We conclude that in patients with plantar fasciitis, ultrasound may detect relatively small differences in plantar fascia thickness even in clinically unequivocal plantar fasciitis.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.74493212836325,"endowment":4.74493212836325,"datacite_reuse_total":6,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"15899349","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2110724223","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.6211,"citation_percentile":0.82746927,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":3},{"year":2013,"count":5},{"year":2014,"count":10},{"year":2015,"count":7},{"year":2016,"count":4},{"year":2017,"count":5},{"year":2018,"count":9},{"year":2019,"count":9},{"year":2020,"count":6},{"year":2021,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":12},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2024,"count":5},{"year":2025,"count":9},{"year":2026,"count":3}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0720048X04003043?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0720048X04003043?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejrad.2004.09.004","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15899349","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Tendon Structure and Treatment","Myofascial pain diagnosis and treatment","Body Contouring and Surgery","Adolescent","Adult","Aged","Body Mass Index","Case-Control Studies","Fasciitis, Plantar","Female","Humans","Male","Middle Aged","Statistics, Nonparametric","Ultrasonography"],"mesh_terms":["Adolescent","Adult","Aged","Female","Humans","Male","Middle Aged","Ultrasonography","Body Mass Index","Case-Control Studies","Statistics, Nonparametric","Fasciitis, Plantar"],"keywords":["Plantar fasciitis","Plantar fascia","Medicine","Heel","Calcaneus","Fasciitis","Aponeurosis","Body mass index","Fascia","Ultrasound","Surgery","Orthodontics","Anatomy","Internal medicine","Radiology"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.18866632.v1","title":"Additional file 1 of Medical imaging for plantar heel pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.18866632","title":"Additional file 1 of Medical imaging for plantar heel pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.18866635.v1","title":"Additional file 2 of Medical imaging for plantar heel pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.18866635","title":"Additional file 2 of Medical imaging for plantar heel pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.18866638.v1","title":"Additional file 3 of Medical imaging for plantar heel pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.18866638","title":"Additional file 3 of Medical imaging for plantar heel pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"}],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-18T18:49:59.460511Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
