On the other hand, epsilon-viniferin (5-200 microM) concentration-dependently inhibited the enzymatic activity of commercial (human recombinant) monoamine oxidase (MAO) isoform (MAO-A and MAO-B) activity, being slightly but significantly more selective against MAO-B than against MAO-A. Taking into account that the principal groups of drugs used to treat major depression are noradrenaline/5-HT uptake or MAO inhibitors, under the assumption that epsilon-viniferin exhibits a similar behaviour in humans in vivo, our results suggest that this natural polyphenol may be of value as a structural template for the design and development of new antidepressant drugs with two important biochemical activities combined in the same chemical structure: noradrenaline/5-HT uptake and MAO inhibitory activity.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.6375861597263857,"endowment":3.6375861597263857,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"16828740","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1965563015","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología","grant_id":"SAF2002-0245","title":null},{"funder_name":"Xunta de Galicia","grant_id":"PGIDIT05BTF20302PR","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":0.5597,"citation_percentile":0.7237399,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":3},{"year":2013,"count":3},{"year":2014,"count":4},{"year":2015,"count":2},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":2},{"year":2018,"count":4},{"year":2019,"count":2},{"year":2020,"count":2},{"year":2021,"count":1},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":2},{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/legal/tdmrep-license","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0014299906006200?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0014299906006200?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejphar.2006.06.005","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16828740","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Sirtuins and Resveratrol in Medicine","Tryptophan and brain disorders","Tea Polyphenols and Effects"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Benzofurans","Blood Platelets","Brain","Cell Line","Clorgyline","Dose-Response Relationship, Drug","Fluoxetine","Humans","Imipramine","Iproniazid","Isoenzymes","Male","Monoamine Oxidase","Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors","Norepinephrine","Recombinant Proteins","Selegiline","Serotonin","Stilbenes","Synaptosomes","Tritium","Wine","Citalopram","Rats, Sprague-Dawley","Rats"],"keywords":["Monoamine oxidase","Monoamine oxidase A","Chemistry","Monoamine neurotransmitter","Monoamine oxidase B","Serotonin","In vivo","Antidepressant","Pharmacology","Enzyme","Biochemistry","Ex vivo","In vitro","Endocrinology","Biology","Receptor"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-10T11:54:01.426690Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
