An overarching definition of mechanobiology is the ability of virtually all animal cell types to both generate mechanical forces and react to them. Although force is a general physical factor, these responses can be very specific when being combined with other factors, specifically with biochemical signals (Iskratsch et al., 2014) . The emergence of the role of physics in the determination of cellular responses has required to update the classical biochemical paradigm of cell signaling, according to which a molecule binds a receptor that triggers a downstream signaling cascade converging on specific cellular outcomes. Today one should also consider how mechanical forces modulate these pathways. This new view can be termed the “mechanochemical paradigm”, in which cells respond to both chemical and mechanical signals in an integrated manner. As an outstanding example, we mention stem cell differentiation, whose outcome is determined both by biochemical differentiation factors and the mechanics of the extracellular environment (Engler et al., 2006).","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.6931471805599453,"endowment":0.6931471805599453,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"36907743","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4323667260","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejcb.2023.151304","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejcb.2023.151304","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0171933523000195?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0171933523000195?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36907743","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/10261/347229","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/e6eb540abe724947b9576404b730658e","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Cellular Mechanics and Interactions","3D Printing in Biomedical Research"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Mechanobiology","Cell mechanics","Cell","Computer science","Mechanics","Physics","Chemistry","Cell biology","Biology","Cytoskeleton"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-12T09:10:11.697860Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
