Phage adaptation to a particular host genotype often results in improved fitness by way of parallel evolution whereby independent lineages hit upon identical adaptive solutions. By contrast, phage adaptation to an evolving host population leads to the evolution of increasing host-range over time and correlated phenotypic and genetic divergence between populations. Phage host-range expansion frequently occurs by a process of stepwise evolution of multiple mutations, and host-shifts are often constrained by mutational availability, pleiotropic costs or ecological conditions.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.6109179126442243,"endowment":3.6109179126442243,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"23890845","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2121998750","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Natural Environment Research Council","grant_id":"NE/H005080/2","title":null},{"funder_name":"Natural Environment Research Council","grant_id":"NE/H005080/1","title":"Host-symbiont coevolution: Exploring the parasitism-mutualism continuum"},{"funder_name":"European Commission","grant_id":"311490","title":"Coevolution of bacteria and conjugative plasmids"}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":2.0536,"citation_percentile":0.85990503,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2014,"count":3},{"year":2015,"count":2},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2018,"count":4},{"year":2020,"count":4},{"year":2021,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":2},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":3},{"year":2025,"count":4},{"year":2026,"count":5}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"Elsevier TDM","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1879625713001107","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1879625713001107","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1879625713001107?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1879625713001107?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.coviro.2013.07.001","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23890845","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://research.manchester.ac.uk/en/publications/f0d76ff2-98a1-4135-bd0a-03ac0b721b5b","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0362-820X>","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/publications/viral-hostadaptation(f0d76ff2-98a1-4135-bd0a-03ac0b721b5b).html","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/id/eprint/77996/1/Hall_et_al_Curr_Opin_Virol_2013.pdf","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/77996/1/Hall_et_al_Curr_Opin_Virol_2013.pdf","host_type":""},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.coviro.2013.07.001","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.coviro.2013.07.001","host_type":""},{"url":"https://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/id/eprint/77996/","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Bacteriophages and microbial interactions","Plant Virus Research Studies","Evolution and Genetic Dynamics","0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences","Adaptation, Physiological","Bacteria","Bacteriophages","Biological Evolution","Host Specificity","Mutation"],"mesh_terms":["Adaptation, Physiological","Bacteria","Bacteriophages","Biological Evolution","Mutation","Host Specificity"],"keywords":["Biology","Adaptation (eye)","Experimental evolution","Host (biology)","Genetic Fitness","Evolutionary biology","Viral evolution","Host adaptation","Population","Genetics","Phenotype","Molecular evolution","Biological evolution","Genome","Gene","Bacteria","Mutation","2406","Bacteriophages","Adaptation, Physiological","Host Specificity"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Life in Land"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-17T19:10:58.464673Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
