While acknowledging attention to be inconstant and wavering, and mind wandering to be ubiquitous, we argue and present evidence that such simple quantitative estimates are misleading and potentially meaningless without serious qualification. Mind-wandering estimates requiring dichotomous judgments of inner experience rely on questionable assumptions about how such judgments are made, and the resulting data do not permit straightforward interpretation. We present evidence that estimates of daily-life mind wandering vary dramatically depending on the response options provided. Offering participants a range of options in estimating task engagement yielded variable mind-wandering estimates, from approximately 60% to 10%, depending on assumptions made about how observers make introspective judgments about their mind-wandering experiences and how they understand what it means to be on- or off-task.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.9344739331306915,"endowment":4.9344739331306915,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"30408603","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2900175719","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council","grant_id":"06459","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institute on Aging","grant_id":"R01 AG08441","title":null},{"funder_name":"Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada","grant_id":"unidentified","title":"unidentified"}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":4.6901,"citation_percentile":0.95905993,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2018,"count":1},{"year":2019,"count":10},{"year":2020,"count":19},{"year":2021,"count":13},{"year":2022,"count":16},{"year":2023,"count":33},{"year":2024,"count":14},{"year":2025,"count":18},{"year":2026,"count":14}],"oa_status":"green","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://osf.io/r3yg9","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://osf.io/r3yg9","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1053810018302411?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1053810018302411?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.concog.2018.10.002","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30408603","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://api.osf.io/v2/nodes/z7qpg/","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://api.osf.io/v2/nodes/r3yg9/","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://psyarxiv.com/9pruj/download","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.concog.2018.10.002","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Mind wandering and attention","Sleep and Wakefulness Research","Neural and Behavioral Psychology Studies","03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine","05 social sciences","0501 psychology and cognitive sciences","Adult","Attention","Ecological Momentary Assessment","Humans","Psychometrics","Self Report","Thinking","Time Factors","Young Adult"],"mesh_terms":["Ecological Momentary Assessment","Adult","Attention","Humans","Psychometrics","Thinking","Time Factors","Young Adult","Self Report"],"keywords":["Mind-wandering","Introspection","Psychology","Cognitive psychology","Task (project management)","Theory of mind","Interpretation (philosophy)","Cognition","Computer science","Frequency","rate","Daily Life","Mind Wandering","Task-unrelated Thought","Adult","Thinking","Young Adult","Time Factors","Psychometrics","Ecological Momentary Assessment","Humans","Attention","Self Report"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Reduced inequalities"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-10T20:26:15.802365Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
