The objective of this study was to develop a patient based QC procedure for the more timely detection of test errors.
Method
Results from a Chem-14 panel measured on the Beckman LX20 analyzer were used to develop the model. Each test result was predicted from the other 13 members of the panel by multiple regression, which resulted in correlation coefficients between the predicted and measured result of >0.7 for 8 of the 14 tests. A logistic regression model, which utilized the measured test result, the predicted test result, the day of the week and time of day, was then developed for predicting test errors. The output of the logistic regression was tallied by a daily CUSUM approach and used to predict test errors, with a fixed specificity of 90%.
Results
The mean average run length (ARL) before error detection by CUSUM-Logistic Regression (CSLR) was 20 with a mean sensitivity of 97%, which was considerably shorter than the mean ARL of 53 (sensitivity 87.5%) for a simple prediction model that only used the measured result for error detection.
Conclusion
A CUSUM-Logistic Regression analysis of patient laboratory data can be an effective approach for the rapid and sensitive detection of clinical laboratory errors.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.639057329615259,"endowment":2.639057329615259,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"26523981","pmcid":"PMC4744560","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1877485012","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Intramural NIH HHS","grant_id":"Z99 CL999999","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIH Clinical Center","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":0.8961,"citation_percentile":0.73090935,"influential_citations":1,"citation_trend":[{"year":2016,"count":3},{"year":2018,"count":2},{"year":2019,"count":1},{"year":2020,"count":1},{"year":2021,"count":1},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2024,"count":3},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/legal/tdmrep-license","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/pmc4744560?pdf=render","host_type":"GREEN"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0009912015005068?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0009912015005068?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2015.10.019","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26523981","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/4744560","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Clinical Laboratory Practices and Quality Control","Reliability and Agreement in Measurement","Chemical Safety and Risk Management","Medicine"],"mesh_terms":["Humans","Laboratories","Quality Control","Sensitivity and Specificity","Medical Laboratory Science","Reproducibility of Results","Models, Statistical","Multivariate Analysis","Logistic Models","Clinical Laboratory Techniques"],"keywords":["CUSUM","Logistic regression","Statistics","Regression analysis","Computer science","Test (biology)","Mathematics","Biology","Quality control","Average Of Normals","Laboratory Test Errors"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-29T22:52:45.207878Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
