We sought to observe trends in PSA testing rates in this timeframe in relation to the changing guidelines. Conversely, in the same time frame, colorectal cancer screening recommendations remained consistent for patients aged 50-75 and we sought to use this as a comparison to observe the effect of differing guidelines. Methods The Centers for Disease Control Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System is a national database of surveys on health-related behaviors and preventive medical services. We extracted data from 2012-2022 where respondents were asked about both prostate cancer screening and colorectal cancer screening. Our primary variable of interest was prostate cancer screening and colorectal cancer screening was used as a positive control. Results Prostate cancer screening decreased among respondents from 70.1% in 2012 to 59.7% in 2022. However, there was a significant rebound in prostate cancer screening prevalence in 2022 from the previous year of 2020. In contrast, colorectal cancer screening rates steadily increased from 70.7% in 2012 to 78% in 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the annual percentage of men who had received prostate cancer screening was statistically different year to year. Conclusions Trends in the rate of screening for prostate cancer and colorectal cancer appeared to adapt to the updated recommendations of USPTF. However, further investigation regarding lower income levels, minority groups, and uninsured men are essential to address the social and racial disparities seen in prostate cancer screening. Efforts to promote shared-decision making may improve effective cancer screening. MicroAbstract The objective was to evaluate how changes in the guideline recommendations correlated with prostate cancer screening rates from 2012 to 2022 and if there were any associated demographic trends. Our population includes men interviewed through the Centers for Disease Control Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, and overall, it has demonstrated that prostate cancer screening trends reflect the United States Preventative Task Force guideline recommendations. Notably, the study emphasized the need to promote and improve shared-decision making, particularly in men within vulnerable populations.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":1.9459101490553132,"endowment":1.9459101490553132,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"39241312","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4401283787","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.7059,"citation_percentile":0.84991993,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2025,"count":3},{"year":2026,"count":3}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://www.clinical-genitourinary-cancer.com/article/S1558767324001496/pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://www.clinical-genitourinary-cancer.com/article/S1558767324001496/pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1558767324001496?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1558767324001496?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.clgc.2024.102178","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39241312","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Prostate Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment","Global Cancer Incidence and Screening","Colorectal Cancer Screening and Detection","Humans","Male","Colorectal Neoplasms","Early Detection of Cancer","Prostatic Neoplasms","United States","Middle Aged","Aged","Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System","Prostate-Specific Antigen","Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S.","Practice Guidelines as Topic","Female"],"mesh_terms":["Aged","Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S.","Female","Humans","Male","Middle Aged","Prostatic Neoplasms","United States","Colorectal Neoplasms","Practice Guidelines as Topic","Prostate-Specific Antigen","Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System","Early Detection of Cancer"],"keywords":["Medicine","Colorectal cancer screening","Prostate cancer","Colorectal cancer","Task force","Prostate cancer screening","Oncology","Cancer","Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System","Internal medicine","Cancer screening","Gynecology","Family medicine","Prostate-specific antigen","Public health","Pathology","Colonoscopy","Health Behavior","Practice Guidelines As Topic","Early Detection Of Cancer","Preventative Health Care"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-31T04:03:20.500248Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
