AMPK acts to stimulate ATP production and reduce ATP consumption when cellular ATP levels fall, thereby normalizing energy balance. Given the central role of AMPK in cellular carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, AMPK activation has been proposed to be a therapeutic target for conditions associated with dysfunctional nutrient metabolism including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hepatic steatosis, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. One way by which increased ATP production can be achieved is by increasing the supply of nutrient substrates. In the 1990s, AMPK activation was demonstrated to stimulate glucose uptake in striated muscle, thereby improving substrate supply for ATP production. Subsequently AMPK activation was postulated to underlie the increase in glucose uptake that occurs during muscle contraction. More recently, however, several lines of evidence have demonstrated that AMPK activation is unlikely to be required for contraction-mediated glucose uptake. Furthermore, despite the importance of AMPK in cellular and whole-body metabolism, far fewer studies have investigated either the role of AMPK in glucose uptake by non-muscle tissues or whether AMPK regulates the uptake of fatty acids. In the present review, we discuss the role of AMPK in nutrient uptake by tissues, focusing on glucose uptake out with muscle and fatty acid uptake.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.833213344056216,"endowment":2.833213344056216,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"33038517","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W3092493248","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Diabetes UK","grant_id":"BDA09/0003904","title":null},{"funder_name":"Diabetes UK","grant_id":"BDA12/0004489","title":null},{"funder_name":"British Heart Foundation","grant_id":"PG/12/1/29276","title":null},{"funder_name":"British Heart Foundation","grant_id":"PG/13/82/30483","title":null},{"funder_name":"King Abdulaziz University","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"King Saud University","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":6,"fwci":0.7456,"citation_percentile":0.68519208,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2021,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":3},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":3}],"oa_status":"green","license":"cc-by-sa","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/view/author/45008.html>,","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/view/author/45008.html>,","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0898656820302849?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0898656820302849?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cellsig.2020.109807","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33038517","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Metabolism, Diabetes, and Cancer","Pancreatic function and diabetes","Adipose Tissue and Metabolism"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Glucose","Humans","Metabolic Diseases","Lipid Metabolism","AMP-Activated Protein Kinases"],"keywords":["AMPK","AMP-activated protein kinase","Glucose uptake","Protein kinase A","Carbohydrate metabolism","Chemistry","Cell biology","Biology","Kinase","Biochemistry","Endocrinology","Insulin","Glucose transport","Lipogenesis","Fatty Acid Transport"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Affordable and clean energy"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-10T10:17:12.621616Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
