{"doi":"10.1016/j.cdnut.2024.103391","title":"Organic Food Consumption and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in the Sister Study","abstract":"Objectives: Organic food is often assumed to offer potential health benefits compared to conventional food.However, there is a scarcity of prospective studies investigating the association between organic food consumption and the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D).Methods: Organic food consumption was assessed using an organic diet score (ODS) among 37,893 women ages 35 to 74 without a history of T2D who were enrolled in the Sister Study cohort between 2003 and 2009.The ODS was calculated based on self-reported frequency of consuming organic produce, meat, or dairy products, categorized as follows: 1) never, 2) less than half of the time, 3) about half the time, 4) more than half the time, or 5) I don't eat produce/meat/dairy.The ODS was computed by assigning scores from 0 to 4 for increasing consumption frequency, with a maximum total score of 12. Incident T2D cases were identified through a self-reported physician diagnosis or T2D medication use during annual follow-ups until September 2021.Cox proportional hazards models with age as a timescale were used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).Results: At baseline, 63% of women reported consuming organic food in the last 12 months.Women who had ever consumed organic food had a lower risk of T2D compared to nonconsumers (HR 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83-0.98)after adjusting for socioeconomic, demographic, lifestyle, and dietary factors.Furthermore, higher ODS (!4) was associated with a decreased risk of T2D (HR 0.79, 95% CI: 0.69-0.90;P trend< 0.001).A lower risk of T2D was also observed for various organic food groups: HR for produce consumption was 0.92 (95% CI: 0.84-0.99,P trend 0.04), HR for meat consumption was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.82-0.98,P trend 0.02), and HR for dairy consumption was 0.88 (95% CI: 0.80-0.97,P trend < 0.01).Conclusions: Our findings suggest that organic food consumption may be associated with a decreased risk of T2D.However, further research is needed to confirm these findings and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.","journal":"Current Developments in Nutrition","year":2024,"id":500206,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":0,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9092,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2024-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":104612,"name":"Dale P.
