{"doi":"10.1016/j.cdnut.2024.103080","title":"Cross-Sectional Association of Maternal Mid-pregnancy Dietary Choline Intake With Interleukin-6 Varies by Intake of Vitamin B12 and Betaine: Evidence From Project Viva","abstract":"Objectives: To assess the long-term effects of prenatal maternal choline intake (480 mg/d vs. 930 mg/d) on offspring spatial memory.Methods: Adolescent offspring (n 21) of mothers who were randomized to consume approximately the Adequate intake (AI) or twice the AI for choline during the 3 rd trimester of pregnancy participated in a follow-up study.Spatial memory was assessed virtually using the Spatial Span (SSP) task from the Cambridge Cognition testing battery (CANTAB).In the SSP task, 10 white boxes are displayed on a screen and then a random subset of 3 to 9 of them are sequentially illuminated.Participants are asked to touch the boxes in the order in which they had been illuminated.The primary outcome measure, span length, is the longest sequence successfully recalled.Results: Adolescents in the 930 mg/d group averaged a span length of 7.6 AE SD 1.5 vs. 6.2AE SD 1.6 in the 480 mg/d group, (p 0.051).These span lengths tended to correlate with scores on a spatial memory task administered to the same children at age 7 yrs (r 0.43, p 0.077).A repeated measures model with both testing ages (7 & 14 yrs) revealed a significant effect of maternal choline intake group on maximum span length (p 0.026).Conclusions: The results of this 14-year follow-up of the adolescent offspring of choline supplemented mothers suggest lasting effects of maternal choline intake on offspring spatial memory.Maternal choline intake of 480 mg/d resulted in marginally poorer spatial memory performance (vs.930 mg/d) in the adolescents.Consistent with extensive rodent data, these findings suggest that the low choline intake of most pregnant women may not adequately support their offsprings' spatial memory function.Larger interventional trials are needed to further elucidate the enduring impacts of maternal choline intake on offspring cognition.","journal":"Current Developments in Nutrition","year":2024,"id":500234,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":0,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9188,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2024-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":301092,"name":"Wei Perng","orcid":"0000-0001-8552-6850","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":239883,"name":"Emily Oken","orcid":"0000-0003-2513-3339","position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":448962,"name":"Karen M Switkowski","orcid":"0000-0001-8212-4354","position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":254530,"name":"Sheryl L.
