A growing number of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) have shown abnormal expression patterns in human thyroid cancer in recent studies. Depending on size, ncRNAs are usually subdivided into two categories: short ncRNAs and long ncRNAs (longer than 200 nucleotides). Short ncRNAs include microRNAs (miRNAs), PIWI-interacting RNAs, small nucleolar RNAs, and endogenous small interfering RNAs, which have been extensively studied due to their roles in developmental and tumor biology. Compared to that of short ncRNAs, the involvement of lncRNAs in human cancers, especially in thyroid cancer, is not as well studied.
