During so-called ‘functional mapping’ sessions with iES, brief pulses of electrical stimulation are followed by careful observation of elicited effects on both the body and mind. IES has great clinical utility when used to identify brain tissue involved in speech and other motor functions that should be spared during neurosurgical resection [2]. Over the past few decades, the clinical application of iES has moved beyond the relatively straightforward mapping of objectively-observable outcomes like motor movements, and into the modulation of subtle and subjective experiences like mood, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive urges [3,4].","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.1972245773362196,"endowment":2.1972245773362196,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"33130019","pmcid":"PMC8720563","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W3097490955","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NINDS NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 NS078396","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Science Foundation","grant_id":"1850938","title":"Intracranial EEG and Direct Cortical Stimulation Study of Stimulus-Driven and Cognitively-Modulated Emotional Processing in the Human Brain"},{"funder_name":"National Science Foundation","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":0.4226,"citation_percentile":0.62844851,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2021,"count":1},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by-nc-nd","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://www.brainstimjrnl.com/article/S1935861X20302825/pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://www.brainstimjrnl.com/article/S1935861X20302825/pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1935861X20302825?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1935861X20302825?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.brs.2020.10.015","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33130019","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/a53f92ac19ee49dcacdc2d64e75ee281","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/8720563","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC8720563","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC8720563?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.brs.2020.10.015","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.brs.2020.10.015","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Studies","Neurological disorders and treatments","Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders","0301 basic medicine","03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Neuromodulation","Transcranial direct-current stimulation","Scopus","Deep brain stimulation","Brain stimulation","Neuroscience","Electrical brain stimulation","Stimulation","Transcranial magnetic stimulation","Human brain","Psychology","Clinical neurophysiology","Medicine","Motor cortex","Physical medicine and rehabilitation","Mood","MEDLINE","Electroencephalography","Internal medicine","Psychiatry","Parkinson's disease","False Positive","Sham Stimulation","Neurosciences.
