The E. coli chemotaxis signaling pathway is a model for signal transduction, but it has unique features. We demonstrate that the need for fast signaling necessitates high abundances of the proteins involved in this pathway. We show that further constraints on the abundances of chemotaxis proteins arise from the requirements of self-assembly both of flagellar motors and of chemoreceptor arrays. All these constraints are specific to chemotaxis, and published data confirm that chemotaxis proteins tend to be more highly expressed than their homologs in other pathways. Employing a chemotaxis pathway model, we show that the gain of the pathway at the level of the response regulator CheY increases with overall chemotaxis protein abundances. This may explain why, at least in one E. coli strain, the abundance of all chemotaxis proteins is higher in media with lower nutrient content. We also demonstrate that the E. coli chemotaxis pathway is particularly robust to abundance variations of the motor protein FliM.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.9444389791664403,"endowment":2.9444389791664403,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"25762341","pmcid":"PMC4375530","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2153885585","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIGMS NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 GM082938","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5R01GM082938-06","title":"History dependence of chemosensing strategy in Escherichia coli"},{"funder_name":"National Science Foundation","grant_id":"1305525","title":"Theoretical Physics of Biological Systems"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"2R01GM082938-13A1","title":"Cell-cell interactions and the development of bacterial communities"}],"total_grants":4,"fwci":0.6434,"citation_percentile":0.62587045,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2016,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":1},{"year":2018,"count":3},{"year":2019,"count":2},{"year":2020,"count":3},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"Elsevier Non-Commercial","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://www.cell.com/article/S0006349515001186/pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://www.cell.com/article/S0006349515001186/pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0006349515001186?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0006349515001186?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bpj.2015.01.024","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25762341","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1503.03055","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/4375530","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://infoscience.epfl.ch/record/276048","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/1503.03055","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bpj.2014.11.2000","host_type":""},{"url":"http://www.cell.com/article/S0006349514032123/pdf","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.48550/arxiv.1503.03055","host_type":""},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.bpj.2015.01.024","host_type":""},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.bpj.2014.11.2000","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.bpj.2015.01.024","host_type":""},{"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14299/167055","host_type":""},{"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14299/167037","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Photoreceptor and optogenetics research","Diffusion and Search Dynamics","Micro and Nano Robotics","0301 basic medicine","03 medical and health sciences","0303 health sciences","Bacterial Proteins","Escherichia coli","Escherichia coli Proteins","Flagella","Membrane Proteins","Methyl-Accepting Chemotaxis Proteins","Protein Multimerization","Signal Transduction"],"mesh_terms":["Methyl-Accepting Chemotaxis Proteins","Bacterial Proteins","Escherichia coli","Flagella","Membrane Proteins","Signal Transduction","Escherichia coli Proteins","Protein Multimerization"],"keywords":["Chemotaxis","Biology","Signal transduction","Escherichia coli","Abundance (ecology)","Cell biology","Transduction (biophysics)","Signaling proteins","Biochemistry","Receptor","Gene","Ecology","Contacts","Molecular Networks (q-bio.MN)","Biophysics","Methyl-Accepting Chemotaxis Proteins","FOS: Physical sciences","Giant Vesicles","Diffusion","Families","Bacterial Proteins","Information","Mechanisms","Landscape","Quantitative Biology - Molecular Networks","Physics - Biological Physics","Fluid Vesicles","Pathways","Statistical-Mechanics","Tubes","Escherichia coli Proteins","Systems","Membrane Proteins","Microinjection","Deformation","Flagella","Biological Physics (physics.bio-ph)","Bilayers","FOS: Biological sciences","Liposomes","Domains","Specificity","Alignments","Protein Multimerization","Prediction"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
