Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) could detach from solid tumors to form new lesions via blood transport and play an important role in cancer metastasis and progression. As part of the liquid biopsy, the investigation and analysis toward CTCs are of great importance for prognosis assessment and tumor precision medical treatment. Unfortunately, the enrichment of circulating tumor cells has been a huge challenge due to the fact that CTCs are very rare and vulnerable. Thus, a number of effective strategies have been developed for the enrichment of CTCs. This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of label-free and label-based methods commonly used in the isolation of CTCs. In particular, we systematically review the most recent advances in the combination of microfluidic chips and biosensing for the enrichment of circulating tumor cells. Finally, we put forward the current barriers that need to be overcome and developmental trends in the CTCs research.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.58351893845611,"endowment":3.58351893845611,"datacite_reuse_total":6,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"35078145","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4205796194","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Natural Science Foundation of China","grant_id":"21775061","title":null},{"funder_name":"State Key Laboratory of Chemo/Biosensing and Chemometrics","grant_id":"2019016","title":null},{"funder_name":"Key Technology Research and Development Program of Shandong","grant_id":"2019GSF108253","title":null},{"funder_name":"Key Technology Research and Development Program of Shandong","grant_id":"22202105","title":null}],"total_grants":4,"fwci":2.4517,"citation_percentile":0.88681987,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2022,"count":4},{"year":2023,"count":9},{"year":2024,"count":9},{"year":2025,"count":8},{"year":2026,"count":5}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://doi.org/10.15223/policy-004","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0956566322000653?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0956566322000653?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bios.2022.114025","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35078145","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Microfluidic and Bio-sensing Technologies","Cancer Cells and Metastasis","Microfluidic and Capillary Electrophoresis Applications","Medicine","Engineering","Biosensing Techniques","Cell Separation","Humans","Liquid Biopsy","Microfluidic Analytical Techniques","Microfluidics","Neoplastic Cells, Circulating"],"mesh_terms":["Liquid Biopsy","Cell Separation","Humans","Neoplastic Cells, Circulating","Biosensing Techniques","Microfluidics","Microfluidic Analytical Techniques"],"keywords":["Circulating tumor cell","Liquid biopsy","Metastasis","Microfluidics","Cancer","Cancer metastasis","Cancer research","Cancer cell","Tumor cells","Isolation (microbiology)","Solid tumor","Medicine","Nanotechnology","Internal medicine","Biology","Bioinformatics","Materials science","Microfluidic chips","enrichment","Circulating Tumor Cells","Label-free","Biosensing","Label-based"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.26648223.v1","title":"Additional file 3 of A comparative study on ctDNA and tumor DNA mutations in lung cancer and benign cases with a high number of CTCs and CTECs","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.26648223","title":"Additional file 3 of A comparative study on ctDNA and tumor DNA mutations in lung cancer and benign cases with a high number of CTCs and CTECs","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.26648217.v1","title":"Additional file 1 of A comparative study on ctDNA and tumor DNA mutations in lung cancer and benign cases with a high number of CTCs and CTECs","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"Image"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.26648220.v1","title":"Additional file 2 of A comparative study on ctDNA and tumor DNA mutations in lung cancer and benign cases with a high number of CTCs and CTECs","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"Image"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.26648220","title":"Additional file 2 of A comparative study on ctDNA and tumor DNA mutations in lung cancer and benign cases with a high number of CTCs and CTECs","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"Image"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.26648217","title":"Additional file 1 of A comparative study on ctDNA and tumor DNA mutations in lung cancer and benign cases with a high number of CTCs and CTECs","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"Image"}],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-12T02:16:55.265622Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
