Though the gut-brain axis is appreciated to be a major target of the stress response, the underlying mechanisms linking ELS to gut dysfunction later in life is incompletely understood. Zebrafish are a powerful model validated for stress research and have emerged as an important tool in delineating neuroimmune mechanisms in the developing gut. Here, we developed a novel model of ELS and utilized a comparative transcriptomics approach to assess how chronic ELS modulated expression of neuroimmune genes in the developing gut and brain. Zebrafish exposed to ELS throughout larval development exhibited anxiety-like behavior and altered expression of neuroimmune genes in a time- and tissue-dependent manner. Further, the altered gut neuroimmune profile, which included increased expression of genes associated with neuronal modulation, correlated with a reduction in enteric neuronal density and delayed gut transit. Together, these findings provide insights into the mechanisms linking ELS with gastrointestinal dysfunction and highlight the zebrafish model organism as a valuable tool in uncovering how \"the body keeps the score.\"","journal":"Brain Behavior & Immunity - Health","year":2023,"id":351288,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":9,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9545,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2023-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":1095994,"name":"Erik Norloff","orcid":"0000-0003-4686-3437","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1096398,"name":"Darius Thompson","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":303876,"name":"Oksana Kosyk","orcid":"0000-0003-0873-3180","position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1096399,"name":"Yingning Sang","orcid":null,"position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":699641,"name":"Angela Chen","orcid":"0000-0003-0214-8482","position":5,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":264482,"name":"Anthony S.
