Two AAA ATPases, NSF and p97/VCP, have been implicated in regulating membrane fusion steps that lead to regrowth of Golgi cisternae from mitotic fragments. NSF dissociates complexes of SNARE proteins, thereby reactivating them to mediate membrane fusion. However, NSF has a second function in regulating SNARE pairing together with the ubiquitin-like protein GATE-16. p97/VCP, on the other hand, is involved in a cycle of ubiquitination and deubiquitination of an unknown target that governs Golgi membrane dynamics. Here, these findings are reviewed and discussed in the context of the increasingly evident role of ubiquitin in membrane traffic processes.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.564348191467836,"endowment":4.564348191467836,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"15878210","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2065391274","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Swiss National Science Foundation","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":2.6927,"citation_percentile":0.893908,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":4},{"year":2013,"count":10},{"year":2014,"count":2},{"year":2015,"count":2},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":3},{"year":2018,"count":1},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2020,"count":6},{"year":2021,"count":5},{"year":2022,"count":2},{"year":2023,"count":2},{"year":2024,"count":8},{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"http://www.elsevier.com/open-access/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0167488905000455?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0167488905000455?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bbamcr.2005.03.011","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15878210","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16038055","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Cellular transport and secretion","Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Disease","Autophagy in Disease and Therapy","Adenosine Triphosphatases","Animals","Catalysis","Cell Cycle Proteins","Golgi Apparatus","Humans","Membrane Fusion","Mitosis","Models, Biological","SNARE Proteins","Soluble N-Ethylmaleimide-Sensitive Factor Attachment Proteins","Ubiquitin","Valosin Containing Protein","Vesicular Transport Proteins"],"mesh_terms":["Valosin Containing Protein","Adenosine Triphosphatases","Animals","Catalysis","Golgi Apparatus","Humans","Membrane Fusion","Mitosis","Models, Biological","Cell Cycle Proteins","Ubiquitin","Vesicular Transport Proteins","SNARE Proteins","Soluble N-Ethylmaleimide-Sensitive Factor Attachment Proteins"],"keywords":["Cell biology","Golgi apparatus","Mitosis","Ubiquitin","AAA proteins","Context (archaeology)","Biology","Endoplasmic reticulum","Lipid bilayer fusion","Chemistry","ATPase","Membrane","Genetics","Biochemistry"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-29T21:42:40.913725Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
