While Delta-8 THC has psychoactive effects and is potentially harmful, little is known about its use. We examined sociodemographic characteristics, motivations, and consumption patterns of Delta-8 THC in US adult cannabis users.
Methods
Cannabis-using adult online survey participants (N = 4,348) provided information on Delta-8 use, and other characteristics. We assessed frequencies of sociodemographics, patterns, and correlates of Delta-8 THC use. Regression models estimated adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of associations between past 30-day Delta-8 THC use, sociodemographic and other characteristics.
Findings
Among past 30-day cannabis users, 16.7% reported Delta-8 THC use. The most common consumption method was vaping concentrated formulations of Delta-8 THC (41.2%). Primary motivations for use were its legal status and perceived therapeutic benefits. Males were more likely than females to report Delta-8 THC use (aOR = 1.4, 95% CI 1.2, 1.7). Respondents residing in states with restrictions on sales of Delta-8 THC products had lower odds of Delta-8 THC use (aOR = 0.7, 95% CI 0.57, 0.86).
Conclusions
Findings provide initial insight into the current state of Delta-8 THC use in the US. Given the limited knowledge on use of Delta-8 THC, and considering emergence of reports indicating its harmful effects, there is urgent need for nationally representative data to investigate correlates of Delta-8 THC use (e.g., effectiveness of state-specific restrictions on its products). Such information can guide public-health policy around Delta-8 THC use.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":2,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"35644057","pmcid":"PMC9245337","openalex_id":null,"authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Institute on Drug Abuse","grant_id":"R01DA050032","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institute on Drug Abuse","grant_id":"T32DA031099","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDA NIH HHS","grant_id":"P30 DA029926","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDA NIH HHS","grant_id":"T32 DA037202","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"2T32DA031099-11","title":"Substance Abuse Epidemiology Training Program (SAETP) at Columbia University"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5R01DA050032-02","title":"Leveraging Social Media to Develop the Cannabis Exposure Index (CEI), A Standardized Measure of Cannabis Use"},{"funder_name":"New York State Psychiatric Institute","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":7,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"green","license":"Elsevier TDM","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/9245337","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S030646032200140X?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S030646032200140X?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.addbeh.2022.107374","host_type":""},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35644057","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine"],"mesh_terms":["Humans","Cannabis","Hallucinogens","Commerce","Adult","Female","Male","Dronabinol","Vaping"],"keywords":["Weed","Hemp","Cannabis","Tetrahydrocannabinol","Marijuana","Delta-8 Thc","Adult","Male","Vaping","Commerce","Hallucinogens","Humans","Female","Dronabinol"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
