Using the polymerase chain reaction and degenerate oligonucleotide primers corresponding to conserved regions of previously cloned glutamate transporters, we isolated from these cells a partial cDNA clone with a sequence of the neuronal type EAAC1 glutamate transporter. The cells express a 4.4 kb message that hybridizes to this cDNA, and they do not express either of the previously described glial type glutamate transporters, GLT-1 or GLAST. The cells were sensitive to the toxic aspartate analog alanosine, which enters the cells by a glutamate transporter. Several human brain tumors examined, including some astrocytic tumors, expressed the EAAT3 glutamate transporter, which is the human homolog of the rodent EAAC1 transporter. Some of the tumors also expressed the other types of glutamate transporter.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.406719247264253,"endowment":4.406719247264253,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"8738164","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2009396050","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NINDS NIH HHS","grant_id":"P0I-NS25554","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIMH NIH HHS","grant_id":"R0I-MH38633","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":1.586,"citation_percentile":0.82464272,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":3},{"year":2013,"count":5},{"year":2014,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":1},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2020,"count":5},{"year":2021,"count":2},{"year":2025,"count":1},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:0169328X9500331L?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:0169328X9500331L?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/0169-328x(95)00331-l","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8738164","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology Research","Amino Acid Enzymes and Metabolism","Diet and metabolism studies","ATP-Binding Cassette Transporters","Amino Acid Sequence","Amino Acid Transport System X-AG","Animals","Brain Neoplasms","Gene Expression","Glioma","Humans","Molecular Sequence Data","Rats","Time Factors","Tumor Cells, Cultured"],"mesh_terms":["Amino Acid Sequence","Animals","Brain Neoplasms","Glioma","Humans","Molecular Sequence Data","Time Factors","Tumor Cells, Cultured","Gene Expression","ATP-Binding Cassette Transporters","Amino Acid Transport System X-AG","Rats"],"keywords":["Biology","Glutamate receptor","Neuroscience","Excitatory amino-acid transporter","Glutamate aspartate transporter","Astrocyte","Transporter","Cell biology","Neuroglia","Central nervous system","Biochemistry","Gene"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-16T16:24:40.240236Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
