Notably, neurologists rank among those with the highest rates of burnout and the lowest levels of satisfaction with work–life balance. However, data on burnout among physicians treating patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) remain limited. In this podcast, we discuss the findings of a USA-based quantitative survey involving 136 physicians who treat patients with MS (defined as having prescribed ≥ 3 MS disease-modifying therapies over a 12-month period). The survey investigated the prevalence of burnout within this population and its associated risk factors. It included 20 questions, including the Mini Z inventory v3.0, demographic data, professional information, and details about work environment and job support. The results revealed a significant prevalence (approximately 50%) of burnout and job-related stress. Key contributors to job stress included the burden of maintaining electronic medical records and long working hours. Despite high levels of work satisfaction reported by participants, it is concerning that nearly 50% of these physicians had considered switching their field due to burnout or related issues. We also explore the impact of burnout on patient care and management, offering recommendations to address these challenges. In this podcast, we explore a recent survey regarding the serious issue of burnout and job-related stress among 136 physicians caring for patients with multiple sclerosis in the United States. Burnout is characterized by extreme physical, emotional, and mental fatigue due to ongoing job-related stress. Those dealing with burnout can feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and incapable of handling the pressures of their job. The survey results are concerning, with 50% of the participating physicians indicating that they were experiencing burnout or its early signs. Factors contributing to this stress included the demands of filling patient electronic medical records, long working hours, inadequate time for documentation, and lack of job support. Burnout can negatively impact empathy and overall decision-making abilities. Although the majority of physicians reported a high level of job satisfaction, nearly 50% contemplated leaving their positions due to burnout and associated factors. These findings demonstrate the urgent need for additional research aimed at improving the overall well-being of physicians in this field, which, in turn, could enhance the quality of care patients receive. To address this pressing issue, there is a need for early identification of burnout, improvements in workplace conditions, and the design of more user-friendly electronic medical records systems. Future efforts could also involve using artificial intelligence to reduce the burden of administrative tasks, allowing physicians to dedicate effective time to their patients. Tackling burnout is essential not only for the health and well-being of physicians but also to ensure the best possible care for patients with multiple sclerosis.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.6931471805599453,"endowment":0.6931471805599453,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"40268820","pmcid":"PMC12089540","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4409718557","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.7849,"citation_percentile":0.83298225,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by-nc","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s40120-025-00738-6.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s40120-025-00738-6.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40120-025-00738-6/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s40120-025-00738-6","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40268820","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/026e65967149408bb03545da0a87cc48","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/12089540","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC12089540","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC12089540?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"}],"fields_of_study":["Healthcare professionals’ stress and burnout","Diversity and Career in Medicine","Innovations in Medical Education"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Burnout","Medicine","Multiple sclerosis","Neurology","Family medicine","Alternative medicine","Psychiatry","Clinical psychology","Pathology","Physicians","Patient Care"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-07T15:51:00.509863Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
