Studies over the past 30 years have provided insights of the multiple mechanisms of immune privilege. At present, three major lines of thought prevail regarding the molecular mechanisms of immune privilege in the eye: there are (1) anatomical, cellular, and molecular barriers in the eye; (2) eye-derived immunological tolerance, the so-called anterior chamber-associated immune deviation; and (3) immune suppressive intraocular microenvironment. In this review, the mechanisms of immune privilege that have been learned from ocular inflammation animal models, especially corneal transplantation, are described. Roles of new B7 family molecules on local immune regulation within the cornea are also introduced.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.07753744390572,"endowment":4.07753744390572,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"20072639","pmcid":"PMC2802514","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1999607957","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.9985,"citation_percentile":0.74466742,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":4},{"year":2013,"count":2},{"year":2014,"count":5},{"year":2015,"count":2},{"year":2016,"count":6},{"year":2017,"count":4},{"year":2018,"count":4},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2020,"count":4},{"year":2021,"count":2},{"year":2022,"count":3},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":4},{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by-nc","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s12177-008-9010-6.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s12177-008-9010-6.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12177-008-9010-6/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://www.springerlink.com/index/pdf/10.1007/s12177-008-9010-6","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s12177-008-9010-6","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20072639","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/2802514","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC2802514","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC2802514?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"}],"fields_of_study":["Immune Response and Inflammation","Neuroinflammation and Neurodegeneration Mechanisms","Corneal Surgery and Treatments"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Immune privilege","Immune system","Cornea","Privilege (computing)","Corneal transplantation","Transplantation","Immunology","Inflammation","Biology","Organ transplantation","Neuroscience","Medicine","Internal medicine","Computer science","Costimulatory molecules","immune suppression","Acaid"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-07T14:13:36.044472Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
