However, one particular form of BCI has not received the attention that it deserves: Affective BCIs that allow for the detection and stimulation of affective states. This paper brings the ethical issues of affective BCIs in sharper focus. The paper briefly reviews recent applications of affective BCIs and considers ethical issues that arise from these applications. Ethical issues that affective BCIs share with other neurotechnologies are presented and ethical concerns that are specific to affective BCIs are identified and discussed.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.442651256490317,"endowment":4.442651256490317,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"30868377","pmcid":"PMC6978299","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2922112639","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":4.6655,"citation_percentile":0.9589555,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2020,"count":9},{"year":2021,"count":17},{"year":2022,"count":15},{"year":2023,"count":12},{"year":2024,"count":13},{"year":2025,"count":12},{"year":2026,"count":3}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s11948-019-00087-2.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s11948-019-00087-2.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s11948-019-00087-2.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11948-019-00087-2/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s11948-019-00087-2","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30868377","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/6978299","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://resolver.tudelft.nl/uuid:8cb85347-9273-4305-804f-6fccd81514e9","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC6978299","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC6978299?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"}],"fields_of_study":["EEG and Brain-Computer Interfaces","Neural and Behavioral Psychology Studies","Cognitive Functions and Memory","Affect","Bias","Brain-Computer Interfaces","Decision Making","Emotions","Humans","Informed Consent","Motivation","Personal Autonomy","Privacy"],"mesh_terms":["Affect","Decision Making","Emotions","Humans","Informed Consent","Motivation","Bias","Privacy","Personal Autonomy","Brain-Computer Interfaces"],"keywords":["Philosophy of science","Neuroethics","Psychology","Engineering ethics","Affect (linguistics)","Social psychology","Human–computer interaction","Computer science","Engineering","Communication","Epistemology","Neuroscience","Philosophy","emotion","Brain–computer Interface","Affective States","Affective Brain–computer Interface"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-02T19:18:42.603993Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
