Metabolic syndrome is a strong predictor for diabetes, which is the leading cause of heart disease in American Indian and Alaska Native populations. Metabolic syndrome and associated risk factors disproportionately impact this population. We describe the presentation, etiology, and roles of structural racism and social determinants of health on metabolic syndrome.
Recent findings
Much of what is known about metabolic syndrome in American Indian and Alaska Native populations comes from the Strong Heart Study as there is scant literature. American Indian and Alaska Native adults have an increased propensity towards metabolic syndrome as they are 1.1 times more likely to have high blood pressure, approximately three times more likely to have diabetes, and have higher rates of obesity compared with their non-Hispanic White counterparts. Culturally informed lifestyle and behavior interventions are promising approaches to address structural racism and social determinants of health that highly influence factors contributing to these rates. Among American Indian and Alaska Native populations, there is scarce updated literature evaluating the underlying causes of major risk factors for metabolic syndrome, and progression to cardiometabolic disease. As a result, the actual state of metabolic syndrome in this population is not well understood. Systemic and structural changes must occur to address the root causes of these disparities.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.295836866004329,"endowment":3.295836866004329,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"35181832","pmcid":"PMC9149125","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4213245149","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute","grant_id":"R56HL159216","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute","grant_id":"K01HL142848","title":null},{"funder_name":"NHLBI NIH HHS","grant_id":"L30 HL148881","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIGMS NIH HHS","grant_id":"T32 GM139779","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"7R56HL159216-02","title":"Seeking Objectivity in Allocation of Advanced Heart Failure (SOCIAL HF) Therapies Trial"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"1K01HL142848-01","title":"Addressing Individual Provider Bias and Group Decision-Making in Selection of Advanced Heart Failure Therapies in Racial/Ethnic Minorities"}],"total_grants":6,"fwci":3.3903,"citation_percentile":0.92397684,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2022,"count":4},{"year":2023,"count":6},{"year":2024,"count":3},{"year":2025,"count":8},{"year":2026,"count":5}],"oa_status":"green","license":"Springer TDM","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://scholarworks.indianapolis.iu.edu/bitstreams/fc9f4cd4-9fa4-4de3-9864-1e6883c0d8a0/download","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://scholarworks.indianapolis.iu.edu/bitstreams/fc9f4cd4-9fa4-4de3-9864-1e6883c0d8a0/download","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s11906-022-01178-5.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11906-022-01178-5/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/1805/37605","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s11906-022-01178-5","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35181832","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/9149125","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Indigenous Health, Education, and Rights","Diabetes, Cardiovascular Risks, and Lipoproteins","Indigenous Studies and Ecology","03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine","Adult","Alaska Natives","Humans","Hypertension","Indians, North American","Metabolic Syndrome","American Indian or Alaska Native"],"mesh_terms":["Alaska Natives","Alaskan Natives","Adult","Humans","Hypertension","Indians, North American","Metabolic Syndrome","American Indian or Alaska Native"],"keywords":["Metabolic syndrome","Medicine","Population","Obesity","Gerontology","Diabetes mellitus","Disease","Psychological intervention","Health equity","Demography","Environmental health","Public health","Internal medicine","Endocrinology","Pathology","Psychiatry","Cardiovascular disease","Cardiovascular abnormalities","Metabolic Disease","Racism","American Indian","Social Determinants Of Health","Alaska Native","Indigenous Populations","Adult","Alaska Natives","Hypertension","Indians, North American","Humans","American Indian or Alaska Native"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":2,"sdg_label":"2.
