Patients received diet, exercise, and body weight management instructional materials plus a Fitbit and were randomized to undergo one of 16 combinations of 4 evidence-based mHealth intervention strategies over 16 weeks. Patients' fatigue, PF, health-related quality of life, behavior changes, and program satisfaction and retention were assessed. Paired t-tests were used to examine changes in outcomes from baseline to follow-up among patients. Factorial analysis of variance examined effective intervention components and their combinations regarding improvement in fatigue and PF scores.
Results
Among 31 patients, we observed significant improvements in fatigue (+ 11.8; t = 4.08, p = 0.001) and PF (+ 2.6; t = 2.75, p = 0.01) scores. The combination of resistance and aerobic exercise with daily self-monitoring was associated with improved fatigue scores (β = 3.857, SE = 1.617, p = 0.027). Analysis of the individual components of the MOST design demonstrated greater improvement in the PF score with resistance plus aerobic exercise than with aerobic exercise alone (β = 2.257, SE = 1.071, p = 0.048).
Conclusions
Combined aerobic and resistance exercise and daily self-monitoring improved PF and reduced fatigue in patients with CLL.
Implications for cancer survivors
This pilot study supported the feasibility of a low-touch mHealth intervention for survivors of CLL and provided preliminary evidence that exercising, particularly resistance exercise, can improve their symptoms and quality of life.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.302585092994046,"endowment":2.302585092994046,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"38472612","pmcid":"PMC11956799","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4394738786","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NCI NIH HHS","grant_id":"T32 CA009666","title":null},{"funder_name":"NCI NIH HHS","grant_id":"P30 CA016672","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"3P30CA016672-41S4","title":"Cancer Center Support (CORE) Grant"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5T32CA009666-27","title":"Research Training in Academic Medical Oncology"}],"total_grants":4,"fwci":2.5527,"citation_percentile":0.89480576,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2024,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":6},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"green","license":"Springer Nature TDM","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/11956799","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/11956799","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s11764-024-01555-w.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11764-024-01555-w/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s11764-024-01555-w","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38472612","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://digitalcommons.library.tmc.edu/uthgsbs_docs/4713","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research","Cancer survivorship and care","Cancer-related cognitive impairment studies","03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine"],"mesh_terms":["Aged","Behavior Therapy","Fatigue","Female","Humans","Male","Middle Aged","Pilot Projects","Quality of Life","Exercise","Leukemia, Lymphocytic, Chronic, B-Cell","Telemedicine"],"keywords":["Medicine","Aerobic exercise","Physical therapy","mHealth","Randomized controlled trial","Quality of life (healthcare)","Psychological intervention","Internal medicine","Nursing","Cancer","Nutrition","Exercise","Physical Activity","Non-hodgkin Lymphoma","Skeletal Muscle Function","Male","Pilot Projects","Middle Aged","Leukemia, Lymphocytic, Chronic, B-Cell","Telemedicine","Behavior Therapy","Quality of Life","Humans","Female","Fatigue","Aged"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[{"name":"nct"}],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-02T04:14:54.288220Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
