The purpose of this study is to determine if the effects of adversity on HIV risk are mediated by syndemics (co-occurring health problems). Participants were 470 ethnically diverse YMSM ages 18 to 24 recruited between 2005 and 2006 and surveyed every 6 months for 24 months. Regression analyses examined the impact of adversity on syndemics (emotional distress, substance use, and problematic alcohol use) and the effects of both adversity and syndemics on HIV risk behaviors over time. Gay-related discrimination and victimization-among other adversity variables-were significantly associated with syndemics and condomless sex (CS). Syndemics mediated the effects of adversity on CS in all models. Adverse events impact HIV risk taking among YMSM through syndemics. These findings suggest that prevention programs aimed at reducing adversity may reduce both the synergistic effect of multiple psychosocial health problems and HIV risk taking.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"25146488","pmcid":"PMC4199441","openalex_id":null,"authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIMH NIH HHS","grant_id":"F31 MH087238","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDA NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01-DA015638-03","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIMH NIH HHS","grant_id":"1 F31 MH087238-01A1","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDA NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 DA015638","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5F31MH087238-02","title":"Strengths and Protective Factors Among Young Men who have Sex with Men (MSM)"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"3R01DA015638-01A2S1","title":"YMSM Drug Use, Sexual Risk &Health Promoting Behaviors"}],"total_grants":6,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"Springer TDM","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s11524-014-9896-1.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s11524-014-9896-1.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11524-014-9896-1/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s11524-014-9896-1","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/4199441","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s11524-014-9896-1","host_type":""},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/pmc4199441?pdf=render","host_type":""},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25146488","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11524-014-9896-1","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine","0305 other medical science"],"mesh_terms":["Humans","HIV Infections","Substance-Related Disorders","Stress, Psychological","Health Behavior","Risk-Taking","Homosexuality, Male","Prejudice","Unsafe Sex","Socioeconomic Factors","Adolescent","Crime Victims","Los Angeles","Male","Young Adult"],"keywords":["Male","Adolescent","Unsafe Sex","Substance-Related Disorders","Health Behavior","HIV Infections","Los Angeles","Young Adult","Risk-Taking","Socioeconomic Factors","Humans","Homosexuality, Male","Crime Victims","Prejudice","Stress, Psychological"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
