This study examined whether the popularity composition of the peer group and the relative difference in popularity between adolescents and their peers are also associated with adolescent drinking. Participants were 800 adolescents (M age = 14.73; SDage = 1.00; 51.6 % girls) from 31 classrooms who completed peer ratings of popularity and self-reports of alcohol consumption. Results showed that drinking was higher among popular than unpopular adolescents, higher among popular adolescents surrounded by less popular classmates, and lower in classrooms with more variability in popularity. Thus, beyond individual popularity, peer group popularity composition also should be taken into account when investigating antisocial and health risk behaviors in adolescence such as drinking.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"27848127","pmcid":"PMC5491679","openalex_id":null,"authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Dutch Research Council (NWO)","grant_id":"022.003.021","title":"Utrecht Centre for Child and Adolescent Studies"},{"funder_name":"Utrecht University","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10964-016-0611-2.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10964-016-0611-2/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10964-016-0611-2.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/2066/174121","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/5491679","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://dspace.library.uu.nl/handle/1874/389608","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://zenodo.org/record/996216","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC5491679","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC5491679?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s10964-016-0611-2","host_type":""},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2Fs10964-016-0611-2.pdf","host_type":""},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27848127","host_type":""},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10964-016-0611-2","host_type":""},{"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/https://repository.ubn.ru.nl/handle/2066/174121","host_type":""},{"url":"https://research-portal.uu.nl/en/publications/533d1b05-d70d-49b9-85be-f3bea70e5c03","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10964-016-0611-2","host_type":""},{"url":"https://sonar.ch/global/documents/189616","host_type":""},{"url":"https://repository.ubn.ru.nl//bitstream/handle/2066/174121/174121.pdf","host_type":""},{"url":"https://zenodo.org/records/996216","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["0501 psychology and cognitive sciences","05 social sciences"],"mesh_terms":["Humans","Risk Factors","Adolescent Behavior","Peer Group","Students","Adolescent","Female","Male","Self Report","Underage Drinking","Psychological Distance"],"keywords":["Adolescence","Social Comparison","Alcohol Use","Popularity","Classroom Composition","Male","Social Psychology","Adolescent","Underage Drinking","Empirical Research","Social Development","Peer Group","Education","SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being","Risk Factors","Developmental and Educational Psychology","Humans","Social Distance","Students","Psychological Distance","Adolescent Behavior","Female","Self Report","Social Sciences (miscellaneous)"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
