Cancer-cell-derived microvesicles have potential as a cancer biomarker as they help shape the tumor microenvironment to promote the growth of the primary tumor and prime the metastatic niche. It is likely that, in cancer cell cultures, the two constituent extracellular shed vesicle subpopulations, observed in dynamic light scattering, represent an exosome population and a cancer-cell-specific microvesicle population and that extracellular shed vesicle size provides information about provenance and cargo. We have designed and implemented a novel microfluidic technology that separates microvesicles, as a function of diameter, from heterogeneous populations of cancer-cell-derived extracellular shed vesicles. We measured cargo carried by the microvesicle subpopulation processed through this microfluidic platform. Such analyses could enable future investigations to more accurately and reliably determine provenance, functional activity, and mechanisms of transformation in cancer.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"25342569","pmcid":"PMC4624394","openalex_id":null,"authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NCI NIH HHS","grant_id":"U54 CA143876","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIGMS NIH HHS","grant_id":"P41 GM103485","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"3U54CA143876-05S1","title":"Diversity Supplement Magnolia Ariza-Nieto"}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"Springer TDM","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10544-014-9891-z.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10544-014-9891-z/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10544-014-9891-z","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s10544-014-9891-z","host_type":""},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/pmc4624394?pdf=render","host_type":""},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25342569","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10544-014-9891-z","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences"],"mesh_terms":["Cell Line, Tumor","Humans","Neoplasms","Microfluidic Analytical Techniques","Cell-Derived Microparticles","Exosomes","Tumor Microenvironment"],"keywords":["Cell-Derived Microparticles","Cell Line, Tumor","Neoplasms","Tumor Microenvironment","Humans","Microfluidic Analytical Techniques","Exosomes"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
