Results show that, in 2019, compared to conventional trabeculotomy (4.6%), the frequency of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), combined with phacoemulsification, remarkably increased (79.0%) for non-operated eyes with mild open-angle glaucoma associated with cataract. Tube-shunt surgery was performed more often for open-angle glaucoma with previously twice failed trabeculectomy (65.8%) and neovascular glaucoma with previously once failed trabeculectomy (63.4%). In addition, during one year post-operatively, MIGS required less frequent follow-up visits compared to filtering surgery.
Conclusion
Although glaucoma specialists in the Japan Glaucoma Society usually prefer trabeculectomy, in the past decade they have selected tube-shunt surgery more often to treat refractory glaucoma. MIGS is increasing remarkably as the choice primary glaucoma surgery.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.784189633918261,"endowment":3.784189633918261,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"32474840","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W3029147750","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":4.3662,"citation_percentile":0.95472415,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2020,"count":2},{"year":2021,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":11},{"year":2023,"count":10},{"year":2024,"count":7},{"year":2025,"count":4},{"year":2026,"count":5}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.springer.com/tdm","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10384-020-00749-w.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10384-020-00749-w/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s10384-020-00749-w","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32474840","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Glaucoma and retinal disorders","Retinal and Macular Surgery","Retinal Diseases and Treatments"],"mesh_terms":["Female","Glaucoma, Open-Angle","Humans","Japan","Male","Ophthalmology","Practice Patterns, Physicians'","Societies, Medical","Specialization","Trabeculectomy","Phacoemulsification","Minimally Invasive Surgical Procedures","Health Care Surveys","Glaucoma Drainage Implants"],"keywords":["Glaucoma","Trabeculectomy","Medicine","Glaucoma surgery","Phacoemulsification","Ophthalmology","Open angle glaucoma","Optometry","Visual acuity","Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery","Surgical Preferences","Tube-shunt Surgery"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-06T10:27:21.128672Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
