Efficacy data were obtained from a network meta-analysis using placebo as the common comparator. Other inputs (e.g., unit costs, adverse-event disutilities, probability of surgery, mortality) were obtained from published literature. Costs were presented in 2012/2013 British pounds. Outcomes included quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). Costs and outcomes were discounted by 3.5% per year. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios were presented for vedolizumab compared with other biologics. Univariate and multivariate probabilistic sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess model robustness to parameter uncertainty.
Results
The model predicted that anti-tumour necrosis factor-naïve patients on vedolizumab would accrue more QALY than patients on other biologics. The incremental results suggest that vedolizumab is a cost-effective treatment compared with adalimumab (incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of £22,735/QALY) and dominant compared with infliximab and golimumab. Sensitivity analyses suggest that results are most sensitive to treatment response and transition probabilities. However, vedolizumab is cost-effective irrespective of variation in any of the input parameters.
Conclusions
Our model predicted that treatment with vedolizumab improves QALY, increases time in remission and response, and is a cost-effective treatment option compared with all other biologics for biologic-naïve patients with moderately to severely active UC.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.4965075614664802,"endowment":3.4965075614664802,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"28271250","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2594152550","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Takeda Pharmaceuticals AG","grant_id":"N/A","title":null}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":3.0053,"citation_percentile":0.91004062,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2017,"count":4},{"year":2018,"count":3},{"year":2019,"count":4},{"year":2020,"count":4},{"year":2021,"count":5},{"year":2022,"count":7},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2024,"count":2},{"year":2025,"count":1},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"http://www.springer.com/tdm","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10198-017-0879-5/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10198-017-0879-5.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s10198-017-0879-5","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28271250","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/10.1007/s10198-017-0879-5","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Inflammatory Bowel Disease","Rheumatoid Arthritis Research and Therapies","Biosimilars and Bioanalytical Methods","Adalimumab","Adult","Antibodies, Monoclonal","Antibodies, Monoclonal, Humanized","Colitis, Ulcerative","Cost-Benefit Analysis","Humans","Infliximab","Male","United Kingdom"],"mesh_terms":["Adalimumab","Infliximab","Network Meta-Analysis","Adult","Antibodies, Monoclonal","Colitis, Ulcerative","Cost-Benefit Analysis","United Kingdom","Humans","Male","Antibodies, Monoclonal, Humanized"],"keywords":["Vedolizumab","Golimumab","Ulcerative colitis","Infliximab","Adalimumab","Medicine","Internal medicine","Gastroenterology","Disease","Economics","Inflammatory Bowel Disease","Cost-effectiveness"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Zero hunger"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-06T01:38:44.073645Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
