We earlier showed that GPI-0100, a semi-synthetic saponin derivative with amphiphilic structure, significantly stimulates the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of influenza subunit vaccine administered via a systemic route. Here, we evaluated the adjuvant effect of GPI-0100 on a virosomal influenza vaccine formulation. In contrast to influenza subunit vaccine adjuvanted with GPI-0100, virosomal vaccine supplemented with the same dose of GPI-0100 provided full protection of mice against infection at the extremely low antigen dose of 2 × 8 ng hemagglutinin. Overall, adjuvanted virosomes elicited higher antibody and T-cell responses than did adjuvanted subunit vaccine. The enhanced immunogenicity of the GPI-0100-adjuvanted virosomes, particularly at low antigen doses, is possibly due to a physical association of the amphiphilic adjuvant with the virosomal membrane. These results show that a combination of GPI-0100 and a virosomal influenza vaccine formulation is highly immunogenic and allows the use of very low antigen doses without compromising the protective potential of the vaccine.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.091042453358316,"endowment":3.091042453358316,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"24062182","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2009678279","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.162,"citation_percentile":0.78147463,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2014,"count":2},{"year":2015,"count":2},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":2},{"year":2018,"count":1},{"year":2020,"count":2},{"year":2021,"count":1},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":5},{"year":2025,"count":1},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"green","license":"https://www.springernature.com/gp/researchers/text-and-data-mining","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://research.rug.nl/files/13993696/MMI_S_13_00083.pdf","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://research.rug.nl/files/13993696/MMI_S_13_00083.pdf","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00430-013-0313-2.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00430-013-0313-2/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00430-013-0313-2","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://research.rug.nl/en/publications/4cc65786-f8f3-4797-87d9-72da613fe83d","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00430-013-0313-2","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24062182","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/11370/4cc65786-f8f3-4797-87d9-72da613fe83d","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Influenza Virus Research Studies","Herpesvirus Infections and Treatments","Immune Cell Function and Interaction"],"mesh_terms":["Adjuvants, Immunologic","Animals","Antigens, Viral","Cell Line","Disease Models, Animal","Dogs","Female","Immunity, Cellular","Influenza Vaccines","Orthomyxoviridae Infections","Saponins","Vaccines, Subunit","Vaccines, Virosome","Mice","Influenza A Virus, H1N1 Subtype","Immunity, Humoral"],"keywords":["Adjuvant","Immunogenicity","Influenza vaccine","Antigen","Virology","Immune system","Medicine","Immunology","Hemagglutinin (influenza)","Vaccination"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-03T04:54:21.833211Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
