Self-control is the ability to regulate behavior, emotions and cognition to achieve goals or adhere to social norms despite temptations, impulses or distractions. Previous studies have found that self-control was negatively correlated with delay discounting. However, the neural mechanism underlying the relationship between self-control and delay discounting remains unclear. To address this question, we examined the neural basis of the relationship between self-control and delay discounting using voxel-based morphometry(VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity analysis(RSFC). The behavioral results demonstrated a negative correlation between delay discounting and self-control. Furthermore, the voxel-based morphometry results showed a positive correlation between self-control and gray matter volume in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(dlPFC). Moreover, self-control was positively correlated with functional connectivity between the medial prefrontal cortex(mPFC) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. More importantly, the association between self-control and delay discounting was shown to be partially mediated by the functional connectivity between the dlPFC and mPFC. These findings suggested that dlPFC-mPFC functional connectivity could be the neural basis underlying the association between self-control and delay discounting, which provided novel insights into how self-control affected delay discounting and offered new explanations from a neural perspective.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":1.3862943611198906,"endowment":1.3862943611198906,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"40397223","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4410565952","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"the Southwest University Postgraduate Research and Innovation Program","grant_id":"SWUS24035","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Natural Science Foundation of China","grant_id":"32371093","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Natural Science Foundation of Chongqing China","grant_id":"CSTB2024NSCQ-MSX0523","title":null}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":2.377,"citation_percentile":0.89332381,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.springernature.com/gp/researchers/text-and-data-mining","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00429-025-02936-2.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00429-025-02936-2/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00429-025-02936-2","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40397223","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Behavioral Health and Interventions","Mental Health Research Topics","Decision-Making and Behavioral Economics","Humans","Delay Discounting","Male","Self-Control","Female","Magnetic Resonance Imaging","Prefrontal Cortex","Young Adult","Neural Pathways","Adult","Brain Mapping","Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex","Reward","Gray Matter"],"mesh_terms":["Self-Control","Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex","Adult","Brain Mapping","Female","Humans","Magnetic Resonance Imaging","Male","Neural Pathways","Reward","Prefrontal Cortex","Young Adult","Delay Discounting","Gray Matter"],"keywords":["Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex","Consumer neuroscience","Prefrontal cortex","Dorsolateral","Self-reference effect","Neuroscience","Association (psychology)","Functional connectivity","Psychology","Working memory","Functional specialization","Delay discounting","Cognitive psychology","Cognition","Impulsivity","Clinical psychology","Psychotherapist","Self-control","Medial Prefrontal Cortex","Voxel-based Morphometry","Resting-state Functional Connectivity"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Reduced inequalities"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-02T07:55:42.734604Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
