Many studies continue to unravel important aspects of its etiopathogenesis, and recent pharmaceutical developments broaden the arsenal of therapeutic opportunity. In this review, we delve into the cellular and molecular determinants of successful resolution of ulcerative colitis, describing novel insights in each of the phases of mucosal healing starting from damaging insults to the mucosa, epithelial restitution, and its adaption to inflammation as well as lymphocyte-driven maintenance and resolution of chronic inflammation.
