Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a flavonoid isolated from honeybee propolis, has shown multiple pharmacological potentials, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and protective effects on nervous systems and multiple organs, since it was found as a potent nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) inhibitor. This review summarizes the advances in these beneficial effects of CAPE, as well as the underlying mechanisms, and proposes that CAPE offers an opportunity for developing therapeutics in multiple diseases. However, clinical trials on CAPE are necessary and encouraged to obtain certain clinically relevant conclusions.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.970291913552122,"endowment":3.970291913552122,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"33492405","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W3124840533","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Natural Science Foundation of China","grant_id":"82000920","title":null},{"funder_name":"the special fund for medical talents of Jilin Province, China","grant_id":"2019SRCJ022","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":6.0129,"citation_percentile":0.96424706,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2021,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":9},{"year":2023,"count":13},{"year":2024,"count":7},{"year":2025,"count":12},{"year":2026,"count":6}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.springernature.com/gp/researchers/text-and-data-mining","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00210-021-02054-w.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00210-021-02054-w/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00210-021-02054-w","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33492405","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Bee Products Chemical Analysis","Insect and Pesticide Research","Healthcare and Venom Research","Animals","Anti-Inflammatory Agents","Antineoplastic Agents","Antioxidants","Caffeic Acids","Drug Development","Humans","NF-kappa B","Neuroprotective Agents","Phenylethyl Alcohol","Propolis"],"mesh_terms":["Drug Development","Animals","Anti-Inflammatory Agents","Antineoplastic Agents","Antioxidants","Caffeic Acids","Humans","Phenylethyl Alcohol","Propolis","NF-kappa B","Neuroprotective Agents"],"keywords":["Caffeic acid phenethyl ester","Propolis","Antifungal","Caffeic acid","Antioxidant","Pharmacology","Flavonoid","Clinical trial","Chemistry","Traditional medicine","Medicine","Biology","Biochemistry","Bioinformatics","Microbiology","Pharmacological activity","Anti-tumor","Anti-inflammatory"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-17T03:40:34.079864Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
