Treatment of rats with guanidinoethyl sulfonate (GES), a taurine analogue which competes with taurine for transport sites, leads to depletion of 60% of retinal taurine with little effect on other free amino acids. Supplementation of the diet with 0.3% taurine gives partial protection against depletion, confirming that taurine-GES competition underlies part of the effects. The magnitude of the depletion suggests the importance of taurine transport across the blood-retinal barrier for the maintenance of retinal taurine levels.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.332204510175204,"endowment":3.332204510175204,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"7170058","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2044992314","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.9842,"citation_percentile":0.7452579,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2021,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"http://www.springer.com/tdm","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/BF00966067.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00966067/fulltext.html","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/BF00966067","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/bf00966067","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7170058","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Aldose Reductase and Taurine","Biochemical effects in animals","Prenatal Substance Exposure Effects","Amino Acids","Animals","Male","Rats","Rats, Inbred Strains","Retina","Taurine","gamma-Aminobutyric Acid"],"mesh_terms":["Amino Acids","Animals","gamma-Aminobutyric Acid","Male","Rats, Inbred Strains","Retina","Taurine","Rats"],"keywords":["Taurine","Retinal","Retina","Blood–retinal barrier","Amino acid","Internal medicine","Endocrinology","Biology","Biochemistry","Chemistry","Neuroscience","Medicine"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Zero hunger"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-24T13:32:17.986018Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
