In the United States, COPD is the fourth leading cause of death and an estimated 119,340 deaths are attributable to COPD. Worldwide COPD ranks sixth among the 30 leading causes of death, accounting for 2,211,000 deaths. As the population ages, its is projected that by 2020, COPD will be the third leading cause of death worldwide (1). COPD is still more common in men than women, however, the greatest increase in the COPD death rate between 1979 and 1989 occurred in females, reflecting the increased number of women who smoke cigarettes (2). COPD interferes with the normal function of the respiratory system and depending on the severity of the disease can curtail activities of daily living. Weight loss is a common development in COPD and the clinical deterioration, diminished life expectancy, and decreased exercise capacity that are associated with weight loss have been acknowledged for many years (3–5). Depending on the population studied and the indicator used to determine nutritional status, between 19% and 60% of COPD patients are classified as malnourished (6). Evidence for the prevention or reversibility of this nutritional decline is accumulating and points to the importance of nutritional interventions in this area.
