{"doi":"10.1002/zaac.200800159","title":"Structural Studies of New Sulfito Mercurates(II) with General Formula <i>xM</i>[<i>X</i>HgSO<sub>3</sub>]middot;<i>y</i>Hg<i>X</i><sub>2</sub>·<i>zM</i>X·<i>n</i>H<sub>2</sub>O (<i>M</i> = NH<sub>4</sub>, K; <i>X</i> = Cl, Br)","abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Several solid phases with the general formula <jats:italic>xM</jats:italic>[<jats:italic>X</jats:italic>HgSO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>]·<jats:italic>y</jats:italic>Hg<jats:italic>X</jats:italic><jats:sub>2</jats:sub>·<jats:italic>zMX</jats:italic>·<jats:italic>n</jats:italic>H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O were obtained from aqueous solutions during phase formation studies in the systems <jats:italic>M</jats:italic><jats:sub>2</jats:sub>SO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>/Hg<jats:italic>X</jats:italic><jats:sub>2</jats:sub> (<jats:italic>M</jats:italic> = NH<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>, K; <jats:italic>X</jats:italic> = Cl, Br). All phases were structurally characterized on the basis of single crystal X‐ray diffraction data and adopt new structure types. Compounds with <jats:italic>x</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>y</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>z</jats:italic> = 1 and <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 0 are isostructural (structure type <jats:bold>I</jats:bold>) and crystallise with two formula units in space group <jats:italic>P</jats:italic>2<jats:sub>1</jats:sub>/<jats:italic>m</jats:italic> and lattice parameters of <jats:italic>a</jats:italic> ≈ 9.7, <jats:italic>b</jats:italic> ≈ 6.2, <jats:italic>c</jats:italic> ≈ 10.4Å, <jats:italic>β</jats:italic> ≈ 111°. Compounds with <jats:italic>x</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>y</jats:italic> = 1 and <jats:italic>z</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 0 (structure type <jats:bold>II</jats:bold>) crystallize in space group <jats:italic>Cmc</jats:italic>2<jats:sub>1</jats:sub> with four formula units and lattice parameters of <jats:italic>a</jats:italic> ≈ 5.9, <jats:italic>b</jats:italic> ≈ 22.0, <jats:italic>c</jats:italic> ≈ 6.9Å. The structures with <jats:italic>x</jats:italic> = 2, <jats:italic>y</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>z</jats:italic> = 1 and <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 0 are likewise isostructural (stucture type <jats:bold>III</jats:bold>) and consist of four formula units in space group <jats:italic>Pnma</jats:italic> with lattice parameters of <jats:italic>a</jats:italic> ≈ 22.2, <jats:italic>b</jats:italic> ≈ 6.1, <jats:italic>c</jats:italic> ≈ 12.4Å. K[HgSO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>Cl]·KCl·H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O is the only representative where <jats:italic>x</jats:italic> = 1, <jats:italic>y</jats:italic> = 0, <jats:italic>z</jats:italic> = 1 and <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 1 (structure type <jats:bold>IV</jats:bold>). It is triclinic (space group <jats:styled-content>$P{\\bar 1}$<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic/tex2gif-ueqn-1.gif\" xlink:title=\"equation image\" /></jats:styled-content>) with four formula units and lattice parameters of <jats:italic>a</jats:italic> = 6.1571(8), <jats:italic>b</jats:italic> = 7.1342(9), <jats:italic>c</jats:italic> = 10.6491(14) Å, α = 76.889(2), <jats:italic>β</jats:italic> = 88.364(2), <jats:italic>γ</jats:italic> = 69.758(2)°. Characteristic for all structures types is the segregation of the <jats:italic>M</jats:italic><jats:sup>+</jats:sup> cations and the anions and/or Hg<jats:italic>X</jats:italic><jats:sub>2</jats:sub> molecules into layers. The [<jats:italic>X</jats:italic>HgSO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>]<jats:sup>−</jats:sup> anions are present in all structures and have <jats:italic>m</jats:italic> symmetry, except for K[HgSO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>Cl]·KCl·H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O with 1 symmetry (but very close to <jats:italic>m</jats:italic> symmetry). The different [<jats:italic>X</jats:italic>HgSO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>] units exhibit very similar Hg‐S distances (average 2.372Å) and are more or less bent with ∠(<jats:italic>X</jats:italic>‐Hg‐S) angles ranging from 159.7 to 173.7°. The molecular Hg<jats:italic>X</jats:italic><jats:sub>2</jats:sub> entities present in structure types <jats:bold>I</jats:bold>‐<jats:bold>III</jats:bold> deviate only slightly from linearity with ∠(<jats:italic>X</jats:italic>‐Hg‐<jats:italic>X</jats:italic>) angles ranging from 174 to 179°.
