{"doi":"10.1002/ps.6013","title":"Host searching and host preference of resident pupal parasitoids of <i>Drosophila suzukii</i> in the invaded regions","abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:sec><jats:title>BACKGROUND</jats:title><jats:p>In its invaded regions, <jats:italic>Drosophila suzukii</jats:italic> (Matsumura) is a novel host for the community of resident parasitoids of <jats:italic>Drosophila</jats:italic>. To attain a high parasitization rate on the novel host, the parasitoids have to locate it and accept it in the presence of other <jats:italic>Drosophila</jats:italic> hosts. We conducted a laboratory choice experiment and a semifield trial to investigate host searching and host preference of the three pupal parasitoid species <jats:italic>Trichopria drosophilae</jats:italic> (Perkins), <jats:italic>Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae</jats:italic> (Rondani) and <jats:italic>Spalangia erythromera</jats:italic> Förster.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>RESULTS</jats:title><jats:p>All three parasitoid species preferred <jats:italic>D. suzukii</jats:italic> over two common native hosts in the choice experiment. In field cages, most parasitoid offspring emerged from <jats:italic>D. suzukii</jats:italic> hosts. While <jats:italic>P. vindemmiae</jats:italic> mainly parasitized hosts in the foliage, most <jats:italic>T. drosophilae</jats:italic> offspring emerged from pupae presented on the ground.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>CONCLUSIONS</jats:title><jats:p>Both <jats:italic>P. vindemmiae</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>T. drosophilae</jats:italic> have the potential to find and parasitize <jats:italic>D. suzukii</jats:italic> in the field.
