John was born on September 25, 1938, in Brooklyn, NY, son of Charles Angelo Termine and Mary Rafael Fiore. A longtime scholar and brilliant scientist, John received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from St. John's University in 1960; a master of science degree in biochemistry from the University of Maryland in 1963; and his doctorate degree in biochemistry from the Cornell University Medical College in 1966. He initiated his scientific career at the Hospital for Special Surgery with Aaron Posner. John then spent more than 20 years as a research biochemist at the National Institute of Dental Research (now the National Institute of Craniofacial and Dental Research [NIDCR]) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD, where he became the chief of the Mineralized Tissue Research Branch (later named the Bone Research Branch).
