Here we demonstrate that hippocampal CRH neurons represent a novel subtype of interneurons in the hippocampus, exhibiting unique morphology, electrophysiological properties, molecular markers, and connectivity. This subset of hippocampal CRH neurons in the mouse reside in the CA1 pyramidal cell layer and tract tracing studies using AAV-Flex-ChR2-tdTomato reveal dense back-projections of these neurons onto principal neurons in the CA3 region of the hippocampus. These hippocampal CRH neurons express both GABA and GAD67 and using in vitro optogenetic techniques, we demonstrate that these neurons make functional connections and release GABA onto CA3 principal neurons. The location, morphology, and importantly the functional connectivity of these neurons demonstrate that hippocampal CRH neurons represent a unique subtype of hippocampal interneurons. The connectivity of these neurons has significant implications for hippocampal function.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.995732273553991,"endowment":2.995732273553991,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"26135556","pmcid":"PMC5373030","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2101607104","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Jamie Maguire","grant_id":"R01 NS073574","title":null},{"funder_name":"NINDS NIH HHS","grant_id":"T32 NS061764","title":null},{"funder_name":"NINDS NIH HHS","grant_id":"P30 NS047243","title":null},{"funder_name":"NINDS NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 NS102937","title":null},{"funder_name":"Russo Grant from Tufts University School of Medicine","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Dean's Award from the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University School of Medicine","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Epilepsy Foundation","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":7,"fwci":1.3002,"citation_percentile":0.75560166,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2015,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":3},{"year":2018,"count":5},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2020,"count":2},{"year":2021,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"green","license":"http://doi.wiley.com/10.1002/tdm_license_1.1","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/5373030","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/5373030","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://api.wiley.com/onlinelibrary/tdm/v1/articles/10.1002%2Fhipo.22487","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/wol1/doi/10.1002/hipo.22487/fullpdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/hipo.22487","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26135556","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Stress Responses and Cortisol","Neuroendocrine regulation and behavior","Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology Research","Animals","Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone","Glutamate Decarboxylase","Hippocampus","Immunohistochemistry","Interneurons","Luminescent Proteins","Membrane Potentials","Mice, Transgenic","Neural Inhibition","Neural Pathways","Neuroanatomical Tract-Tracing Techniques","Optogenetics","Patch-Clamp Techniques","Polymerase Chain Reaction","Single-Cell Analysis","Tissue Culture Techniques","gamma-Aminobutyric Acid"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone","gamma-Aminobutyric Acid","Glutamate Decarboxylase","Hippocampus","Immunohistochemistry","Interneurons","Luminescent Proteins","Membrane Potentials","Mice, Transgenic","Neural Inhibition","Neural Pathways","Polymerase Chain Reaction","Patch-Clamp Techniques","Tissue Culture Techniques","Neuroanatomical Tract-Tracing Techniques","Single-Cell Analysis","Optogenetics"],"keywords":["Neuroscience","Hippocampal formation","Corticotropin-releasing hormone","Psychology","Hypothalamus","Hippocampus","Inhibition","GABA","Interneuron","Crh"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-02T09:49:14.110064Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
