{"doi":"10.1002/essoar.10502994.1","title":"Hadean, Archean, and modern Earth: Zircon-modeled melts illuminate the formation of Earth’s earliest felsic crust","abstract":"<jats:p>The magmato-tectonic environment(s) of origin for Earth’s earliest crust\nare enigmatic and fiercely debated. Revealing the composition of the\nmelts from which Hadean (&gt;4.02 Ga) zircons crystallized\nmight clarify conditions of initial crust construction. We calculate\nmodel melts using Ti-calibrated zircon/melt partition coefficients\n(KdZrc(Ti)) and published trace element data for Hadean and Archean\nzircons. The same treatment is applied to zircons from possible analogue\nenvironments (MORB, Iceland, arcs, lunar), to constrain potential\npetrogenetic similarities and distinctions between the early and modern\nworld. Model melts from oceanic environments (MORB, oceanic arc,\nIceland) have higher heavy rare earth element (HREE) contents and\nshallower middle REE (MREE) to HREE/chondrite (ch) slopes than those\nfrom continental arcs and tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite suites\n(TTGs). Hadean and Archean model melts are nearly indistinguishable from\none another, both resembling TTGs and continental arcs, with pronounced\ndepletion of HREE and slope reversal in heaviest REE. A limited number\nof samples &gt; 4.25 Ga yield model melts with broadly similar\ncharacteristics to those from younger Hadean and Archean zircons, but\nwith relatively elevated REE (~half order of magnitude)\nand higher LREE and MREE relative to HREE.
