Impaired immunity in the intestinal tract can lead to immunopathology, which manifests in different diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal graft‐versus‐host disease. A disturbed communication between epithelial cells, immune cells, and microbiome will shape pathogenic immune responses to antigens, which need to be counterbalanced by tolerogenic mechanisms and repair mechanisms.
\n
Here, we review how impaired intestinal immune function leads to immunopathology with a specific focus on innate immune cells, the role of the microbiome, and the resulting clinical manifestations including intestinal graft‐versus‐host disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and enteropathy in primary immunodeficiency.
","journal":"European Journal of Immunology","year":2022,"id":45525,"datarank":1.0147640019770048,"base_score":3.4011973816621555,"endowment":3.4011973816621555,"self_citation_contribution":0.5101796072493234,"citation_network_contribution":0.5045843947276812,"self_endowment_contribution":0.5101796072493234,"citer_contribution":0.5045843947276812,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":29,"citer_count":26,"citers_with_citation_signal":16,"citers_with_endowment":16,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":null,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":null,"fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":212545,"name":"Klaus Warnatz","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":212546,"name":"Stephan Rosshart","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":98212,"name":"Sagar","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":212547,"name":"Yakup Tanriver","orcid":null,"position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":212544,"name":"Robert Zeiser","orcid":"0000-0001-6565-3393","position":0,"is_corresponding":false}],"reference_count":0,"raw_metadata":{"has_enrichment":true,"base_score":3.367295829986474,"endowment":3.367295829986474,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"35339113","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4221035744","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft","grant_id":"SFB1160‐2","title":null},{"funder_name":"Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft","grant_id":"44189134","title":null},{"funder_name":"Deutsche Krebshilfe","grant_id":"70113473","title":null},{"funder_name":"Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft","grant_id":"unidentified","title":"unidentified"}],"total_grants":4,"fwci":1.7891,"citation_percentile":0.85196264,"influential_citations":1,"citation_trend":[{"year":2022,"count":4},{"year":2023,"count":4},{"year":2024,"count":3},{"year":2025,"count":10},{"year":2026,"count":7}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by-nc","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdfdirect/10.1002/eji.202149530","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdfdirect/10.1002/eji.202149530","host_type":"HYBRID"},{"url":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdfdirect/10.1002/eji.202149530","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/eji.202149530","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full-xml/10.1002/eji.202149530","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/eji.202149530","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35339113","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.1002/eji.202149530","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Immunodeficiency and Autoimmune Disorders","Immune Cell Function and Interaction","IL-33, ST2, and ILC Pathways","Medicine","Biology","0301 basic medicine","03 medical and health sciences","Epithelial Cells","Gastrointestinal Microbiome","Graft vs Host Disease","Humans","Immunity, Innate","Inflammatory Bowel Diseases","Intestinal Mucosa","Microbiota"],"mesh_terms":["Gastrointestinal Microbiome","Epithelial Cells","Graft vs Host Disease","Humans","Immunity, Innate","Intestinal Mucosa","Inflammatory Bowel Diseases","Microbiota"],"keywords":["Biology","Immunopathology","Immunology","Immunity","Primary immunodeficiency","Immunologic Deficiency Syndromes","Immune system","Graft-versus-host disease","Inflammatory Bowel Disease","Microbiome","Microbiota","610","Graft vs Host Disease","Humans","Epithelial Cells","Intestinal Mucosa","Inflammatory Bowel Diseases","Immunity, Innate","Gastrointestinal Microbiome"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
