{"doi":"10.1002/cpt196895647","title":"Phenylalanine tolerance tests in patients receiving chloramphenicol","abstract":"<jats:p>Chloramphenicol has been shown to inhibit the intestinal transport of phenylalanine in animals. Phenylalanine tolerance tests were performed on 22 patients receiving chloramphenicol. Serum phenylalanine levels were depressed in patients with chloramphenicol‐induced hematopoietic toxicity. This alteration in phenylalanine tolerance did not precede the development of hematopoietic toxicity. Impaired intestinal transport of phenylalanine is the most likely explanation for the reduced blood levels.
