This multicentre randomized trial was undertaken to compare the costs of the three anaesthetic methods in general surgical practice.</jats:p>\n               </jats:sec>\n               <jats:sec>\n                  <jats:title>Methods</jats:title>\n                  <jats:p>Between January 1999 and December 2001, 616 patients at ten hospitals who underwent primary inguinal hernia repair were randomized to local, regional or general anaesthesia. The primary endpoints were direct costs. Secondary endpoints were indirect costs and recurrence rates.</jats:p>\n               </jats:sec>\n               <jats:sec>\n                  <jats:title>Results</jats:title>\n                  <jats:p>Total intraoperative, as well as total early postoperative, data showed local anaesthesia to have significant cost advantages over regional and general anaesthesia (P < 0·001). The advantage was also significant for total hospital and total healthcare costs (P < 0·001), whereas there was no significant difference between regional and general anaesthesia.</jats:p>\n               </jats:sec>\n               <jats:sec>\n                  <jats:title>Conclusion</jats:title>\n                  <jats:p>The use of local anaesthesia for inguinal hernia repair was significantly less expensive than regional or general anaesthesia.</jats:p>\n               </jats:sec>","journal":"British Journal of Surgery","year":2007,"id":20361,"datarank":7.732379161415905,"base_score":4.7535901911063645,"endowment":4.7535901911063645,"self_citation_contribution":0.7130385286659547,"citation_network_contribution":7.019340632749951,"self_endowment_contribution":0.7130385286659547,"citer_contribution":7.019340632749951,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":115,"citer_count":109,"citers_with_citation_signal":96,"citers_with_endowment":96,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":134857,"name":"H Zetterström","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":134858,"name":"P Carlsson","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":134859,"name":"E Nilsson","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":133778,"name":"P Nordin","orcid":null,"position":0,"is_corresponding":false}],"reference_count":0,"raw_metadata":{"has_enrichment":true,"base_score":4.7535901911063645,"endowment":4.7535901911063645,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"17330241","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2124843031","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Federation of County Councils, Sweden","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Health Research Council of South-East Region of Sweden","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Board of Health and Welfare, Sweden","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":7.3145,"citation_percentile":0.97426003,"influential_citations":4,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":8},{"year":2013,"count":6},{"year":2014,"count":9},{"year":2015,"count":4},{"year":2016,"count":6},{"year":2017,"count":9},{"year":2018,"count":11},{"year":2019,"count":8},{"year":2020,"count":5},{"year":2021,"count":6},{"year":2022,"count":2},{"year":2023,"count":5},{"year":2024,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"https://academic.oup.com/journals/pages/open_access/funder_policies/chorus/standard_publication_model","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/bjs/article-pdf/94/4/500/36687086/bjs5543.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/bjs/article-pdf/94/4/500/36687086/bjs5543.pdf","host_type":"BRONZE"},{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/bjs/article-pdf/94/4/500/36687086/bjs5543.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.wiley.com/onlinelibrary/tdm/v1/articles/10.1002%2Fbjs.5543","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://academic.oup.com/bjs/article-pdf/94/4/500/36687086/bjs5543.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/bjs.5543","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17330241","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Hernia repair and management","Anesthesia and Pain Management","Aortic aneurysm repair treatments","Medicine","Ambulatory Surgical Procedures","Anesthesia, Conduction","Anesthesia, General","Anesthesia, Local","Cost-Benefit Analysis","Follow-Up Studies","Hernia, Inguinal","Humans","Postoperative Care"],"mesh_terms":["Ambulatory Surgical Procedures","Anesthesia, Conduction","Anesthesia, General","Anesthesia, Local","Cost-Benefit Analysis","Follow-Up Studies","Hernia, Inguinal","Humans","Postoperative Care"],"keywords":["Medicine","General anaesthesia","Inguinal hernia","Randomized controlled trial","Anesthesia","Regional anaesthesia","Hernia repair","Surgery","Hernia","General anaesthetic"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-06-04T09:06:20.912147Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
