{"doi":"10.1002/ajpa.24262","title":"Program of the 90th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists","abstract":"Area Learning Centers, such as Gordon Parks High School, serve students who are at risk of not meeting high school graduation requirements and are dealing with systemic stressors such as institutional racism and limited socioeconomic standing. Distance learning as a result of Covid-19 exacerbates the struggles these students wrestle with daily. Interactive, tactile learning activities are essential for these young scholars and distance learning is not conducive to this approach. Given this context, why should students care about human evolution? And, how can we use human evolution to build students' personal investment in their education? We address these questions through a three phase process. During the rst phase we interview students to assess their current understanding of human evolution and their desire to explore the topic further. During phase two, students work with 3D models to build phylogenies based on observed cranial features of fossil hominins. During the third phase we revisit the interview questions. We evaluate changes in the level of interest and understanding by comparing the answers from both interviews. We quantify investment by calculating attendance rates, assignment submission rates, and online engagement. We compare these data from the unit on human evolution to previous educational units taught during this academic year. We gauge the effectiveness of our approach and re ect on the factors that affected the results. This project is synthetic in nature and these data are designed to initiate conversations and a deeper exploration of ways in which educators can reach all young scholars.","journal":"American Journal of Physical Anthropology","year":2021,"id":203168,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":6,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9527,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2021-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":784380,"name":"San Roman, Carla","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":784379,"name":"Torres-Tamayo, Nicole","orcid":null,"position":0,"is_corresponding":true}],"reference_count":0,"raw_metadata":null,"created_at":"2026-07-18T23:51:14.206397Z","pmid":"33660845","pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
