{"doi":"10.1002/9781119930419.ch7","title":"Vital Pulp Treatment – Material Selection","abstract":"The success rate of vital pulp treatment involves a series of relevant clinical criteria. From a clinical perspective, understanding the pulp conditions and the nature of biomaterials for sealing and healing exposed areas is of utmost importance. This chapter begins with a detailed explanation of the native pulp condition and how it responds to injuries from trauma or decay. It also discusses how these factors affect the decision-making process for treatment options. Later, it presents the background and current standard materials for vital pulp therapies, their properties, major advantages, and drawbacks, including some remarks on the proteins, biomolecules and signalling pathways involved in the mechanisms of repair. It also highlights the biological interactions of the materials with the dentine-pulp complex, bringing clinical evidence of their performance and tissue response.
