The National Information Security Organization classification of metadata encompasses the following four types: descriptive metadata, structural metadata, administrative metadata, and markup languages. A metadata schema consists of a labeling, marking or encoding system, used for storing information about the way data is organized and structured. Business metadata define the information content that the data provide in a business context. Business metadata are an important aspect in any successful information governance program. Navigational integration metadata describe the data linkage and data movement within the environments. Operational metadata describes the data integration applications and supporting job runs. Primary sources of operational metadata include data integration job logs and data quality checks.
