{"doi":"10.1002/9781119633884.ch96","title":"The Future of Heart and Lung Transplantation","abstract":"Cellular therapies, which include cellular transplantation, have the potential to improve organ function without the need for traditional heart or lung transplantation. This chapter describes the concepts, ongoing research, current clinical experience, and future directions of regenerative medicine related to thoracic transplantation. The Myoblast Autologous Grafting in Ischemic Cardiomyopathy trial is the most prominent randomized investigation into the efficacy of skeletal myoblasts in human patients. Stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes can be produced and transplanted into a recipient's heart, survive, and electrically couple with the recipient myocardium.
