Sperm competition is proposed to have a number of effects on both male and female physiology, anatomy, and behavior. In males, these include effects on sperm, on the penis, and on behaviors such as mate guarding. In females, these include potential effects on reproductive tract morphology, and effects on sexually selected traits such as copulation calls. The induction of sperm competition may be a powerful mechanism by which females can exert cryptic postcopulatory mate choice. Difficulties associated with the collection and analysis of sperm hinder direct observations of the process and its mechanisms in most populations of free‐ranging and wild primate species.
","journal":"The International Encyclopedia of Primatology","year":2017,"id":15435,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":0,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":null,"fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":117774,"name":"James P.
