{"doi":"10.1002/9781118960608.bm00022","title":"Procaryotic Domains","abstract":"<jats:p>\n            Procaryotes are single cells or simple associations of similar cells (usually 0.2–10.0 µm in smallest dimension, although some are much larger) forming a group defined by cellular, not organismal, properties (i.e., by the structure and components of the cells of an organism rather than by the properties of the organism as a whole). Some differential characteristics of procaryotes and eucaryotes are described in detail. Recent phylogenetic analyses of the\n            <jats:italic>Bacteria</jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Archaea</jats:italic>\n            , and\n            <jats:italic>Eucarya</jats:italic>\n            using conserved protein sequences have shown that the majority of trees support a closer relationship between the\n            <jats:italic>Archaea</jats:italic>\n            and\n            <jats:italic>Eucarya</jats:italic>\n            than between\n            <jats:italic>Archaea</jats:italic>\n            and\n            <jats:italic>Bacteria</jats:italic>\n            . For practical purposes, the\n            <jats:italic>Bacteria</jats:italic>\n            may be divided into three phenotypic subgroups: (1) those that are Gram‐negative and have a cell wall, (2) those that are Gram‐positive and have a cell wall, and (3) those that lack any cell wall. The major groups of the\n            <jats:italic>Archaea</jats:italic>\n            include (a) the methanogenic\n            <jats:italic>Archaea</jats:italic>\n            , (b) the sulfate‐reducing\n            <jats:italic>Archaea</jats:italic>\n            , (c) the extremely halophilic\n            <jats:italic>Archaea</jats:italic>\n            , (d) the\n            <jats:italic>Archaea</jats:italic>\n            lacking cell walls, and (e) the extremely thermophilic S\n            <jats:sup>0</jats:sup>\n            ‐metabolizing\n            <jats:italic>Archaea</jats:italic>\n            . Some characteristics differentiating\n            <jats:italic>Bacteria</jats:italic>\n            from\n            <jats:italic>Archaea are explained in detail</jats:italic>\n            .
