{"doi":"10.1002/9781118896877.wbiehs417","title":"Safer sex","abstract":"<jats:p>\n            <jats:italic>Safer sex</jats:italic>\n            refers to the use of condoms and other barrier methods and sexual behavioral strategies that are designed to reduce the likely transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It contrasts with\n            <jats:italic>risky sex</jats:italic>\n            , which represents a hierarchy of sexual acts drawn on the basis of risks associated with STI transmission: anal sex is the most risky, followed by vaginal sex, and then by oral sex. Safer sex as a concept was first used by gay activists during the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and is now widely used by public health practitioners at all societal levels. Ideological battles over the formula “safer sex” and its implications have been ongoing; the Christian right, in alignment with conservative and religious values, was advocating for an abstinence‐only education, while public health practitioners have pushed for a comprehensive sexuality education and for evidence‐based interventions.
