As the maternal counterpart of interactions with the conceptus, the endometrium responds to embryonic pregnancy recognition signals and provides the physiological environment for early development, attachment, and implantation of the conceptus. The analysis of transcriptome changes in the endometrium during the estrous cycle and early pregnancy aims at the identification of genes and networks, which are relevant for endometrium biology and uterine receptivity. Here we review current approaches addressing this topic, including transspecies comparisons and the use of specific animal models with disturbed embryo–maternal interactions.
